Zander K Hotel — Modern Design Next to Bergen Station
Located directly next to Bergen Train Station and just a 3-minute walk from the city center, Zander K Hotel brings contemporary urban design to Bergen’s heart. Since opening in 2017, this 4-star designer hotel has established itself as one of Bergen’s most stylish properties, earning recognition from Wallpaper* magazine as one of the world’s most urban hotels. With 249 modern rooms featuring minimalist Scandinavian design, a vibrant lobby bar, organic-focused restaurant Matbaren, excellent fitness facilities, and complimentary breakfast buffet, Zander K offers a hip base for exploring Bergen with unbeatable convenience for train travelers and those using public transport.

Atmosphere and Style
Zander K embraces bold, contemporary Nordic design with an industrial-chic aesthetic that sets it apart from traditional Bergen hotels. The striking deep-blue and glass facade announces the hotel’s modern credentials, while inside, the elongated communal lobby features raw concrete ceilings, sleek furniture, and an open-plan layout with a lengthy communal table perfect for working on laptops or enjoying drinks from the vibrant bar. The atmosphere is relaxed yet stylish, attracting a younger, design-conscious crowd alongside travelers of all ages who appreciate modern comfort and central location.
The hotel champions minimalist Scandinavian principles — blonde wood furniture, clean lines, and functional design without excess. The vibe is distinctly urban and hip, with a buzzing energy in the lobby that serves as both a hotel reception and a popular hangout for locals and visitors alike. While some guests find the minimalism refreshing and Instagram-worthy, others note the trade-offs of the stripped-back aesthetic, particularly in standard rooms. The hotel proudly emphasizes sustainability with organic breakfast options, local ingredients in the restaurant, and eco-certifications. Overall, Zander K succeeds in creating a contemporary “lifestyle hotel” experience at mid-range prices, though opinions vary on whether the style-over-substance approach works for extended stays.
Rooms and Accommodation
Zander K offers 249 rooms across multiple categories, all decorated in minimalist Nordic style with tall ceilings and large windows that maximize natural light. Standard Rooms are compact but functional, featuring comfortable beds with quality linens, flat-screen TVs, work desks, small open-style wardrobes, and private bathrooms with walk-in showers and hairdryers. The characteristic exposed raw concrete ceilings add industrial character, though some guests find this detracts from coziness. Superior/Deluxe rooms offer more space and coffee machines, while Junior Suites and Suites provide considerably more room with additional amenities. The hotel has 25 wheelchair-accessible rooms and can connect five adjoining rooms for families.
Guests consistently praise the comfortable beds and clean, modern bathrooms with quality toiletries. The soundproofing effectively blocks noise from neighboring rooms and the adjacent train station — a frequently mentioned positive. However, standard rooms lack certain amenities some travelers expect: no coffee/tea facilities in rooms (though free 24-hour coffee/tea is available in the lobby), no minibars or safes in standard categories, limited storage space, and no air conditioning (windows open for fresh air). The minimalist design means rooms feel efficient for short stays but potentially sparse for longer visits.

Facilities and Services
Dining: The hotel’s on-site restaurant Matbaren serves an extensive organic breakfast buffet (included in most room rates) featuring both hot and cold options, fresh fruit, gluten-free choices, quality breads, smoked salmon, and cappuccino machines. Guests consistently rate the breakfast highly, praising the variety and quality, though it can become crowded around 8 AM when tour groups arrive. For dinner, Matbaren offers upscale gastropub cuisine with local, organic, and sustainable ingredients, including Norwegian specialties. The attached bar serves craft beers and local wines by the glass, creating a relaxed atmosphere for evening drinks.
Fitness: The hotel features an excellent gym on level 2 — frequently cited as one of the best in European hotels, complete with a full weight rack, C2 rowing ergometer, and comprehensive cardio equipment. This is a standout feature for fitness-conscious travelers.
Additional Services:
Location
Zander K’s location is its strongest selling point — literally next to Bergen Train Station, making it perfect for travelers arriving by train or catching the Norway in a Nutshell tour. The Bergen Light Rail (Bybanen) stop at Nonneseter is a 2-minute walk, providing direct connections to Bergen Flesland Airport (approximately 45 minutes). The bus station and airport shuttle stop are 5-10 minutes away on foot.
Bergen city center is just 3 minutes on foot, while the UNESCO-listed Bryggen waterfront wharf is 10-15 minutes’ walk. The hotel is surrounded by practical conveniences including a shopping mall with pharmacy, grocery store, Espresso House, Baker Brun bakery, and various cafes and restaurants. While not directly in the tourist heart like Bryggen, this location offers easy access to everything in Bergen with better value and less tourist chaos. All major attractions, museums, the Fish Market, and Fløibanen Funicular are reachable within 10-15 minutes on foot. Bergen Flesland Airport is 16 km away.

Short Stays: The minimalist rooms work perfectly for 1-3 night stays where you’re out exploring most of the day and just need a comfortable, clean base.

Perfect hotel for our Bergen stay! Location right next to the train station made everything so easy — we walked from the train in literally two minutes. The room was modern, clean, and incredibly quiet despite being next to the station. The bed was so comfortable! Breakfast was excellent with tons of choices including gluten-free options. The free coffee and tea available 24/7 in the lobby was a great touch. Staff were friendly and let us store our luggage for free while we did a fjord tour. The free bikes were awesome for exploring the city. Would definitely stay here again!

Lovely modern hotel in a great location for exploring Bergen. The rooms are minimalist but very comfortable and clean — perfect for our 3-night stay. Breakfast was generous with excellent variety. The gym is outstanding, probably the best we’ve seen in a European hotel with proper weights and rowing machine. Staff were helpful and approachable. Only downsides were the room was quite small with limited storage, and no coffee facilities in the room, though there’s free coffee downstairs 24/7. Good value for Bergen and we’d stay again for a short visit.

I stay at Zander K regularly when visiting Bergen — it’s become my go-to hotel. The location by the railway station is unbeatable, and the light rail stop is right there for airport connections. Rooms are clean, beautifully designed, and the beds are excellent. The breakfast is very good with great variety and organic options. The reception service is always pleasant and professional. The modern style and central location make this perfect for business or leisure. Highly recommend, especially if you’re arriving by train.

Conclusion
Zander K Hotel delivers a distinctly contemporary Bergen experience that prioritizes style, location, and convenience at mid-range prices. The unbeatable position next to Bergen Train Station makes this the obvious choice for travelers using Norway’s scenic railways or the popular Norway in a Nutshell tour — you’re literally steps from the platform. The minimalist Scandinavian design creates Instagram-worthy spaces that appeal to design enthusiasts, while the excellent gym, organic breakfast, and vibrant lobby atmosphere add substance beyond just style. What Zander K does best is offer modern, clean, comfortable accommodation with smart amenities (24/7 free coffee, free bikes, outstanding gym) at prices significantly lower than luxury chains, all while maintaining a hip, urban vibe that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere special rather than just functional.
The trade-offs are worth understanding: standard rooms embrace true minimalism, meaning limited storage, no in-room coffee facilities, and compact dimensions that work perfectly for short stays but might feel restrictive over several nights. The industrial-chic aesthetic with exposed concrete ceilings won’t appeal to everyone, and those seeking traditional Norwegian charm or romantic waterfront views should look elsewhere. However, for travelers who value location, design, good value, and practical amenities over traditional luxury or spaciousness, Zander K hits the sweet spot. Whether you’re catching an early train to Oslo, embarking on a fjord adventure, or simply want a stylish base for exploring Bergen without paying premium Bryggen prices, this hip designer hotel delivers exactly what it promises — modern urban comfort in Bergen’s most convenient location.
